In his inaugural address, President Deodatus Balile highlighted the critical importance of access to information as a fundamental right that underpins the realisation of other rights. He emphasized the EAES's commitment to ensuring this right is upheld across Eastern Africa and beyond by supporting robust and sustainable media houses. President Balile stressed the need for collaboration with governments, political parties, civil societies, and the international community to promote media sustainability, advocating for constructive engagement rather than antagonism.
The AGM brought together members from editors' bodies in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, who deliberated on various issues impacting journalists' welfare in the region. Key discussions focused on challenges such as declining revenues, regulatory hurdles, and the need for innovation in journalism. The EAES reaffirmed its dedication to addressing these challenges and fostering an environment that supports journalism rooted in democratic principles and public interest.
